Really?
South Carolina Democrats are going to play the race, color card with Nikki Haley in regards to - wait for it - her voter registration.
Oh. My. God.
What? Are they too afraid to call her a failure for what she's not done while in office? Too scared to say she should have never been elected?
Please, fellow Democratic-minded people, do not follow down this road. Let's attack her and all Republicans for the miserable failures they have already accrued.
Republicans consider people on welfare lazy people, but I can promise you there are people who vote Republican and receive the same assistance GOP lawmakers itch to cut every fiscal year.
That's OK, though. Those people only care about their gay-free card Republicans have given them. You know, social issues pay the bills in this state. You didn't know that?
I heard a Republican voter told a bill collector that there should be no money owed because her GOP lawmaker made sure gays could not marry in S.C. LMAO.
More importantly, Republicans have tightened a noose on voting rights. The uproar should be unbearable. But, it's not.
No, we're subjected to whether it matters or not Nikki Haley is white.
Again, the issue doesn't pay my damn bills. The dysfunctional policies Republicans enact in this state - and nationally - affect me more.
And Democrats should be attacking full throttle on those every single day, while reminding the general public social issues don't pay the bills.

Tea Party Leaders Bag Themselves
Let's all take a look at what these clowns are involved in.
Oh, and here's a real Tea flake.
The president of the Grand Strand Tea Party and his son were arrested on charges related to counterfeit language software being sold to a Loris man, according toan Horry County police report.
Anthony Jack Trinca, 61, and Michael Robert Trinca, 23, both of Myrtle Beach, spent about two hours at J. Reuben Long Detention Center Tuesday, each charged with unauthorized use or trafficking in counterfeit trademarks by an individual, according to jail records. They were each released on $5,000 bail.
Oh, and here's a real Tea flake.
One of the most uncompromising members of the Republican tea party, Congressman Joe Walsh (R-Ill.), has a personal problem he'd rather not discuss in public: his ex-wife is suing him for over $117,000 in unpaid child support.
Federal Children's Watch – Tell Your Member of Congress to Vote NO on the Boehner Debt Ceiling Bill!
One week: that's all the time we have before the country will default on its obligations, if Congress doesn't act responsibly. You’d think that at a time like this, our leaders would get serious about crafting a fair solution that works for all Americans.
House Speaker John Boehner and conservative House members are doing the opposite. They're using this moment to force their radical agenda on us by slashing basic assistance programs for vulnerable American children. It could produce the greatest increase in poverty of any law ever passed by Congress. Tell your Member of Congress to vote NO on Speaker Boehner’s budget proposal! Click here.
The $1.2 trillion dollars slashed over 10 years in Speaker Boehner's proposal would devastate child care, Head Start, K-12 education, Pell grants, job training, pregnant women's health services, and many others.
Speaker Boehner's plan also requires an additional $1.8 trillion worth of cuts by the end of the year, which forces Congress' hand even further. Dismantling the Affordable Care Act, slashing Medicaid, or unraveling other key pieces of the safety net for women and families would be all but guaranteed. All this, without promising a single penny raised through additional tax revenues from those with the greatest means to pay. Click here for more information on what the Boehner plan does.
This is the lowest of the low. We need your help to send a strong message: say 'no' to Speaker Boehner's devastating debt ceiling proposal. Click here.

Nikki Haley offers to drive citizens to the DMV but her office is unhelpful to Army vet
Columbia, SC -- Just last week the South Carolina Democratic Party released a video sharing Nikki Haley's comments stating, "$12, $20 or $32 will not stop someone from being able to vote," referring to the cost of a birth certificate or driver's license. She went on to say that if anyone didn't have a ride to the DMV "she would drive them herself and take them to get their picture ID."
Well, the Democratic Party has once again found her in a lie. The Tucker and Cunningham family of Columbia, South Carolina called the Governor's office and requested assistance for their elderly cousin, Army veteran Robert Tucker. Instead of a helpful Governor they were faced with a Governor's office that was uninformed by Haley's promise and unable to assist in the request.
The South Carolina Democratic Party released the following video responding to her statements and Chairman Dick Harpootlian had this to say:
"Republican Nikki Haley has proved once again unable to tell the truth. Whether she is misstating her job record, her own employment record or lying to Army veterans like Robert Tucker, it's obvious she just doesn't have it in her to tell the truth. She would rather climb a tree to tell a lie than stand on the ground and tell the truth."

Insanity: 1,068+ SC jobs held hostage
Last weekend, House Republican leaders proved just how far they are willing to go to achieve their ideological goals.
At 12:01 a.m. Saturday morning, they shut down the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). As if bringing America to the brink of default hasn’t done enough damage already. Are they out of their minds?
Because of the extreme ideological agenda of House Republicans and their political game-playing, 4,000 workers were furloughed over the weekend and more than 90,000 jobs across the country are on the line—including 1,068 in SC.(1)
Meanwhile, the government is out $200 million a week in airline ticket fees that normally fund our aviation infrastructure. That loss now will be added to the national debt.
Tell your members of Congress the FAA needs to get up and running immediately. Republican House leaders’ hostage-taking needs to stop.
Republican leaders in Congress got elected by calling for job creation. But instead of creating jobs, they’re playing political games.
They are disrupting the FAA and airport infrastructure improvements for one reason—to play to a political ideology focused on scapegoating workers. They want to take the right to democratic union elections away from air and rail workers—and they’re willing to destroy tens of thousands of good, middle-class jobs to do it.(2)
Demand Congress get the FAA back to work—without scapegoating workers.
House Republicans have proven they would rather make our economy worse to score political points than make it better to help workers.
Otherwise, why would they halt critically needed work, lay off 4,000 FAA workers and jeopardize more than 90,000 private-sector construction jobs?
The fact is, this shutdown never should have happened—and the solution is simple: House Republican leaders need to think about what’s best for America instead of holding up an entire government agency to achieve their extreme, ideological ends.
Tell Congress: The 1,068 SC workers whose jobs are on the line are counting on you to immediately fund the FAA—and America’s workers are counting on you to leave workers' rights alone.
With your help, we’ll send a strong message loud and clear.

Jack Conway: Protecting Medicaid
I wanted to let you know about the latest developments in the Office of the Attorney General.
Last week, I announced a $26.4 million settlement with the partner-members of Passport. Passport is the Medicaid service provider for the Greater Louisville region. I launched an investigation in December and concluded that the Passport partners illegally diverted Medicaid funds from Passport back to doctor groups and hospitals. I was able to recover $26.4 million on behalf of taxpayers and worked with the Cabinet for Health and Family Services to ensure that Passport had increased accountability moving forward.
Read more about the settlement by visiting the following links:
Since becoming Attorney General, I've recovered more than $200 million for taxpayers, and Medicaid Fraud collections are up more than 600%.
That's a record of results and fighting for issues that are important to Kentucky families. But there is still much more work to do, which is why I need your help in this campaign for a second term.
Thanks, again, for your support.
Elizabeth, Eva, our new baby girl Alex and I will see you on the campaign trail sometime soon.
Sincerely,

Tarryl Clark: Stomach Churning
Not once, not twice, but THREE times Chip Cravaack has voted to gut Medicare since he went to Washington in January.
That anyone would break this important promise and put seniors at the mercy of drug companies and rapidly rising health care costs is stomach churning. What’s worse is when it’s your Congressman.
Cravaack obviously just doesn’t get it. He needs to be told that Minnesotans want Medicare strengthened, not destroyed.
Sign my petition to tell Chip Cravaack to stop attacking Medicare and our seniors!
Cravaack’s most recent attempt to destroy Medicare was called “one of the most ideologically extreme pieces of major budget legislation to come before Congress in years, if not decades,” by the non-partisan Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. His plan ends Medicare and cuts Social Security benefits for our seniors, it gives huge tax breaks and loopholes to Big Oil and multimillionaires.
Cravaack’s got the wrong priorities. Creating good paying jobs for Minnesotans and Americans is the only way we’re going to grow this economy and preserve the American dream for our children.
This isn’t just my opinion; it’s what I’m hearing from hundreds of Minnesotans as I crisscross central and northern Minnesota. While Cravaack spends his time on the East Coast cozying up to his big Wall Street sponsors, Minnesotans are telling me they want a Representative who focuses on getting people back to work, not cutting critical health coverage our seniors count on.
Sign my petition to send a clear message to Chip Cravaack: We want jobs, not cuts.
Our campaign is bringing Minnesotan’s together around creating shared economic prosperity. With your support, this is a message that we can send, loud and clear, every single day from now until November 5th, 2012. And it’s a message that I’ll carry with me every day as a United States Congresswoman.
Sincerely,

Tarryl
P.S. Now that you’ve signed my petition, make a contribution today to help us keep holding Chip Cravaack accountable.

Tragedy in Norway
On Friday, after setting off a massive explosion in downtown Oslo, a gunman walked into a youth camp disguised as a policeman and used a semi-automatic rifle and a Glock pistol to gun down everyone in his path. According to the latest reports, the death toll has reached as many as 76 people, many just children.
It is a gruesome, senseless tragedy and our hearts go out to the victims and families whose lives have been shattered overnight.
Mayors Against Illegal Guns is a coalition of mayors determined to stand up for the victims of gun violence in our communities. Join us in standing with those who lost loved ones in this terrible tragedy, and we will make sure your message is delivered to the Norwegian embassy.
Send a message of condolence to those affected by the terrorist attack in Norway.
This terror attack was perpetrated by a self-proclaimed anti-immigrant, anti-Islamic “crusader.” But the truth is, his views don’t matter.
Regardless of motivation, when terrorists and other dangerous individuals can get their hands on guns and explosives, the inevitable result will be grief and suffering. And Friday’s tragedy should remind us of the changing face of this threat.
Today, we want to send our prayers and messages of solidarity to all of Norway so they know that the world is standing with them. We mourn their losses.
Please join us in sending a message of sympathy to the victims’ families:

I AM a Minority in the South Carolina Democratic Party
And I embrace it.
I'd much rather be true to what I believe. Let me share with you all - and maybe you'll discover your a minority, too.
I am not a sellout. I don't donate to Republicans or pal around with them as if they are my friends. You see, I realize they are in the business of screwing the people Democratic politicos are supposed to support. I couldn't care less whether I am liked. I care more about being recognized as helping those who look for help from the people who say they help them.
I also don't need an ego to be stroked. I am not doing what I do for one.
No glitz here. I live a life of a liberal. I am outspoken. I don't hide behind anyone or anything. The people of this state need a mouthpiece who stands up for them. I do it in spite of both parties in this state.
I am a steelworker. I live paycheck to paycheck a majority of time. I know what it is like to struggle. I am not a lawyer. I am not a lobbyist. I am not part of the inner circle.
I am in reality - amongst those who also live the way I live.
I love being who I am. I love ruffling feathers in my own party because they are too afraid to jeopardize any "relationships" with Republicans in this state.
I embrace the fact Republicans rule this town and I stand up to it 100 percent. You're not going to get Republicans in South Carolina to really work for the betterment of the people here. Nor will they shut off election mode.
I am a liberal. I am outspoken.
And, as a minority, I believe Dems shouldn't bend over all the time in this state. I believe Dems ought to fight just as hard - even harder - than the GOP. I believe Dems ought not be afraid.
Until things change, all Dems will be minorities in this state.

Haven't You Heard? Republicans Consider Dems 'Enemies'
Hello, South Carolina Democrats. Have you heard? You are considered 'enemies' in this state.
The one thing I have learned - out of experience and factual research - throughout the years is Republicans do not shut off election mode. Ever.
The Democratic people in this state must not realize this or care. Must be both. They must also hold out their hands for jobs, waiting for the GOP to throw them scraps.
Well, GOPer Curtis Loftis throws it in your face, Dems.
Oh, but this politics. The victors reap the benefits. Yeah, right.
Dems have NOTHING in this state. Their conservative-wannabe strategy got them that.

A fraternity brother and personal attorney of South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis stands to make $3 million in fees working on a lawsuit for Loftis' department, a deal the state's top lawyer approved despite the close ties.
Attorney General Alan Wilson said Loftis didn't initially disclose details of his longtime relationship with lawyer Mike Montgomery. When Wilson learned of them later, he signed off on Montgomery's involvement because he believed it wouldn't affect taxpayers.
Loftis said he told Wilson about his connection to Montgomery from the start and "did everything to say, you know, 'This is my guy,'" when he sought clearance from Wilson.
"We don't hire enemies to do stuff for us," Loftis said.

Gay Marriage Still Interests S.C. Residents More Than Jobless
Interesting tidbit.
People have been discussing the recent New York gay marriage issue. People in South Carolina.
As if a ship is sailing Southward with freshly married gay couples.
I just wanted to remind people of the graphic I have on this site - on your right - that shows the amount of jobless people growing everyday. This issue should dominate the conversations of South Carolinians.
Especially since we have a governor who fudges numbers as the unemployment rate rises in many counties.
Gay marriage? Gays?
Let God handle what you are not the judge of. However, you can judge for yourself who can and cannot lead this state upward.

Tuesday: Emergency drop by at Rep. Tim Scott's office
Can you drop by Rep. Scott's office and tell him "Don't destroy the American Dream?" Click below to sign up and drop by this local office Tuesday at noon: 1800 North Oak Street, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577

Even after the president offered Republicans a debt-ceiling deal most MoveOn members probably consider unconscionable—with trillions in cuts, even to Medicare and Social Security—Speaker Boehner still walked away from the table.
Our only chance to move the Republicans is to make sure that the dire consequences of their actions are laid directly at their feet. So with other leaders of the American Dream movement, we're putting out an urgent call for every patriotic American to show up outside Republican congressional offices on Tuesday at noon to deliver a crucial message: "Don't destroy the American Dream."
We need to show up in force and let Rep. Scott know that we'll hold him accountable for his position and for the consequences to our economy.
Can you drop by Rep. Scott's office on Tuesday at Noon?
We'll follow up with all the details and a link to print your own "Don't destroy the American Dream" signs to bring to Rep. Scott.
Then you just have to show up on Tuesday here:
1800 North Oak Street, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577
We need to show as much public concern as possible, so please pass this along to anyone else you know who could join in on Tuesday. This is a moment when we need to bring together the vast majority of Americans who find the Republicans' position immoral. Let's get out there on Tuesday and let Republicans like Rep. Scott know that crashing the American economy in order to protect tax giveaways for the rich is unacceptable.
Click here if you can drop by Rep. Scott's office on Tuesday at noon:
Thanks for all you do. –Daniel, Elena, Tate, Robin, and the rest of the team

Columbia, SC -- Nikki Haley has said in two recent television interviews that "$12, $20 or $32 will not stop someone from being able to vote," referring to the cost of a birth certificate or drivers license. She went on to say that if anyone didn't have a ride to the DMV "she would drive them herself and take them to get their picture ID."
These comments were made after Haley signed into law a piece of legislation that will prohibit over 170,000 South Carolinians from being able to vote due to lack of identification.
The South Carolina Democratic Party released the following video responding to her statements and Chairman Dick Harpootlian had this to say:

What Is at Stake for Children in the Debt Ceiling Debate
Washington DC has been more active this month than in most summers. Both Houses of Congress have cancelled week long recesses to address the issue of federal debt ceiling limit. According to the Treasury Department, on August 2, 2011, the United States Federal Government will officially hit the nation’s debt ceiling. What will be the impact on kids if the Congress fails to act to raise the ceiling?
If we hit our debt ceiling, the government would owe more per month than it brings in. The Bipartisan Policy Center estimates that the government will owe approximately $306 billion for the month of August while only collecting $172 billion in revenue.
The Treasury could decide to protect selected big government programs. They could pay the interest to our creditors on our debt which cost $29 billion. The government could also decide to pay Social Security benefits ($49.2 billion), Medicare & Medicaid benefits ($50 billion), national regular Pentagon spending on defense (31.7 billion), and unemployment insurance benefits ($12.8 billion). All sensible payments to finance our debt and protect the elderly, unemployed, and not cause us to pay penalties for refusing to honor defense contracts we have signed. This spending amounts to $172.7 billion, leaving no money for anything else.
What would the federal government not be able to afford? Food stamps and nutrition programs ($9.3 billion), military pay ($2.9 billion), veterans programs ($2.0 billion), federal government salaries & benefits ($14.2 billion), and education programs ($20.2 billion), among many other things others. The government could finance the social safety net or normal operations of government. Not both.
Leaving out Social Security payments alone would jeopardize the nearly 1.3 million minors (18 and under) that receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) as well as the millions of grandparents and retirees that help support their grandchildren. Anyone who receives any federal assistance or payment would be in jeopardy. This could mean the difference between putting food on the table or going hungry.
Do we really want the federal government to make these types of choices? Prioritize Medicare over education? Pay defense contractors but not troops? There is no reason for these choices to happen now. This is a choice made by members of Congress. Interest rates on Treasury bonds are at historic lows. Investors across the globe want to invest in America. The only thing that could stop them is Congressional inaction on the debt ceiling.
If the federal government defaults on its obligations, the following could happen:
• Millions of families and children will see their benefits eliminated or dramatically reduced. This includes military families, the disabled and infirm, and those in most need of food assistance.
• Interest rates will rise as borrowing becomes more and more risky. States and local municipalities will pay much more to raise funds for new schools and hospitals. People will pay a higher mortgage for a new home and for a student to go to college.
• Businesses will pay more to borrow capital for new and existing projects resulting in higher unemployment as businesses lay-off more and have fewer available jobs. Unemployment has a tremendous negative impact on families and children of the unemployed.
• With shaky credit, the value of the US dollar around the world will drop, which means products that are imported into our country will become more expensive. Clothing, food, gas, or anything produced outside the United States will cost more. Families already struggling will be least able to absorb any increase in costs.
We need your help right now. A deal could come at any minute. Please contact your members of Congress and tell them to prevent the United States government from defaulting and to not cut children’s programs as part of any deal to raise the debt ceiling.

Tim Scott Missing In Action on Georgetown Port
“Basically, there’s two million tons out there we could get,” Posek said.
That’s a reference to potential shipping customers who would be willing to bring cargo in and out of Georgetown.
But just as with the chicken and the egg, these want a guarantee that the channel will be dredged to 27 feet and will be maintained at that depth before they will commit.
Tim usually runs from the truth. I was surprised he got caught in Charleston by union members, but since he only stays in that area it was bound to happen. Don't worry, Scott won't face the music in Georgetown.
I also get tired of reminding representatives of the people their duties. You see, they are in office to make sure the areas the represent get their fair share from the federal government. To listen to these Fox Noise Zombies, you'd think that's the most evil thing to happen ever. Ever.
But Timmy isn't anywhere to be seen in Georgetown. Unless you count the skips here and there for fundraising purposes, he's not been around the port area to nail home the fact jobs can be sustained and produced in one swoop.
In fact, a study done in February 2010 by Donald Schunk, who was then the research economist for Coastal Carolina University, indicated that there was a potential of three million tons of new cargo.
Schunk said in his report that those three million tons of new cargo would mean there would be a $26.7 million increase in total economic output. That would include $7.5 million in labor income and 251 jobs.
Look, that's called addition. A positive. A number that would bring the job deficit down in this state and your district. How's that for you, Tim?
I really can't put all the blame on Tim, though. We've had a city council sit on their hands, a county council not stepping up 100 percent and state lawmakers doing God knows what - other than getting funds for the port.
Matter of fact, Kevin Ryan hinted at basking in the sun on a resort - not in those words - located on the port.
In order for these as-yet unnamed companies to use the port, the channel has to be dredged.
“It will take $33 million over three years for both the dredging and diking,” Posek told the Rotarians.
After that, the annual maintenance cost will be an estimated $6 million to $8 million to keep the channel at its 27-foot depth.
“If we can get the dredging started, we can get started on the channel,” Posek said.
For a number of years, former U.S. Rep. Henry Brown managed to get an “earmark” for about $3 million to $6 million in maintenance dredging, Posek said.
Now, though, Congress has essentially eliminated earmarks.
No, they haven't. What Republicans have done is try their damnedest to stop anything positive that would reflect good on President Obama or - hold on - even themselves.
And when Republicans talk about being pro-business, you'd think they'd act upon it. Being pro-business doesn't mean you let a port that provides business fall behind in upkeep. Being pro-business doesn't mean you stop paying for maintenance to keep it running.
Tim Scott - and other Republicans, few Dems - would rather sink the ships than help save them. Screw the people, keep the power.
Robert Greenstein's Statement on 'Cut, Cap, and Balance Act' U.S. House Will Consider July 19

"The 'Cut, Cap, and Balance Act' that the House of Representatives will vote on next week stands out as one of the most ideologically extreme pieces of major budget legislation to come before Congress in years, if not decades. It would go a substantial way toward enshrining Grover Norquist’s version of America into law.
- The plan would lock in cuts over the next ten years at least as severe as those in the Ryan budget plan that the House passed in April, by writing spending caps into law at the year-by-year levels of spending (as a share of GDP) the Ryan budget contains.
- It also would hold the increase in the debt limit needed by August 2 hostage to approval by two-thirds of the House and the Senate of a constitutional amendment to require a balanced budget every year while effectively barring any increases in revenues. The constitutional amendment would make all revenue-raising measures unconstitutional unless they secured a two-thirds supermajority in both the House and the Senate.
- The 'Cut, Cap & Balance' measure cites three constitutional balanced-budget amendments (H.J. Res 1, S.J. Res 10, and H.J. Res 56) and states that Congress must approve one of them or a similar measure before the debt limit can be raised. All three of the cited proposals would require cuts deeper than those in the Ryan budget. All three measures would establish a constitutional requirement that total federal expenditures may not exceed 18 percent of GDP, and all three would essentially require that the budget be balanced within the coming decade.
Claim That Social Security and Medicare Would Not Be Touched Falls Apart Under Scrutiny
Talking points that the legislation’s proponents circulated on July 15 seek to foster an impression that the measure would protect Social Security and Medicare. Such an impression would not be accurate. The legislation would inexorably subject Social Security and Medicare to deep reductions.
The measure does not cut Social Security or Medicare in 2012. And it does not subject them to automatic cuts if its global spending caps are missed. It is inconceivable, however, that policymakers would meet the bill’s severe annual spending caps through automatic across-the-board cuts year after year; if they did, key government functions would be crippled.
Policymakers would have little alternative but to institute deep cuts in specific programs. And as noted elsewhere in this statement, before the debt limit could be raised, Congress would have to approve a constitutional balanced budget amendment that essentially requires cuts even deeper than those in the Ryan budget. Reaching and maintaining a balanced budget in the decade ahead while barring any tax increases would necessitate deep cuts in Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. After all, by 2021, total expenditures for these three programs will be nearly 45 percent greater than expenditures for all other programs (except interest payments) combined. Big cuts in these programs would be inevitable.
Moreover, because taxes — including payroll taxes — would be virtually impossible to raise as a result of the new constitutional barrier, Social Security solvency would have to be restored entirely through benefit cuts. Balanced Social Security packages that include measures to raise Social Security’s $106,000 payroll tax cap, so that higher-income Americans do not escape the tax on much of their earnings, would effectively be ruled out.
- The “Cut, Cap, and Balance Act” would require cuts totaling $111 billion immediately, in the fiscal year that starts 75 days from now, despite a 9.2 percent unemployment rate. These cuts would equal 0.7 percent of the projected Gross Domestic Product in fiscal year 2012 and would thus cause the loss of roughly 700,000 jobs in the current weak economy, relative to what the number of jobs otherwise would be.
- The bill overturns a feature of various bipartisan budget laws over the past quarter century, by subjecting programs for the poorest Americans to the specter of meat-axe across-the-board cuts. It does so even as it protects tax breaks and tax subsidies for the wealthy and powerful by erecting a constitutional barrier to any measure that would raise any revenue.
In addition, as noted, the measure seeks to render it virtually impossible to raise new revenue by barring the necessary increase in the debt limit until both houses of Congress have approved a constitutional amendment which requires that the budget be balanced every year, that no measure raising any taxes may pass Congress unless two-thirds of the House and Senate approve it, and that budget cuts deeper than Ryan’s be instituted.
Adding to the extreme nature of the measure, the legislation also reverses a feature of every law of the past quarter-century that has contained a fiscal target or standard enforced by across-the-board cuts. Since the Gramm-Rudman-Hollings law of 1985, all such laws have exempted the core basic assistance programs for the poorest Americans from such across-the-board cuts. '“Cut, Cap, and Balance,' by contrast, specifically subjects all such programs to across-the-board cuts if its spending caps would be exceeded.
It does so even as it seeks to erect a constitutional firewall to safeguard tax cuts and tax breaks for the most well-off Americans. Thus, an impoverished elderly widow living on Supplemental Security Income — which provides benefits that lift people to just 75 percent of the poverty line — could have her assistance cut back under the measure’s across-the-board budget cuts even as millionaire hedge-fund managers retained their lucrative carried-interest tax breaks.

BUDGET TALKS: TELL POLICY MAKERS TO PROTECT CHILDREN AND THE MIDDLE CLASS!
Talks continue at the highest levels of the federal government on deficit reduction, spending cuts, and the debt ceiling, as the deadline for raising the nation’s debt limit rapidly approaches. At stake in these talks is the very future of our nation. Will leaders craft a deal that hurts those least able to afford further sacrifice, or will they realize that any deal must include ways to raise revenue from those most able to pay?
There is much to be concerned about in the current debate. Proposed cuts to education funding and Medicaid will harm students and our future. Proposals to tax employer-sponsored health care would cause millions of middle class families to lose their benefits. And, now some policy makers are talking about cutting Social Security as well!
Instead of balancing the budget on the backs of the middle class, policymakers should ensure that any deal includes revenue raised by making the wealthiest in our nation pay their fair share. Elected officials should work together on a bipartisan basis to help Main Street hang on, not help Wall Street get more.
Take Action Today: Tell Congress that the budget should not be balanced on the backs of the middle class and our most vulnerable populations!

Big win against illegal gun trafficking
Thanks to you, it just got tougher for drug cartels to illegally traffic guns from the U.S. to Mexico.
For years, Americans and Mexicans have watched in horror as Mexican drug cartels have used assault rifles trafficked from America to kill thousands of people. Now, the Department of Justice has finally announced they are implementing a new initiative to help investigators take down illegal gun traffickers.
Your letter to President Obama and comments to the Justice Department made all the difference. We need to thank President Obama for cracking down on drug cartel gun trafficking and urge him to take even more dramatic action to keep guns out of the hands of criminals.
Send a message to President Obama: “Thanks for taking this promising step forward – please redouble your efforts to fight against illegal guns.”
The new initiative is based on an idea first proposed by the mayors in our coalition and is one of four measures mayors and supporters across the country called for in our recent open letter to the President. And the more than 25,000 public comments Mayors Against Illegal Gun supporters sent to the Justice Department helped overwhelm those generated by the gun lobby.
With your support, sensible policies supported by an overwhelming majority of Americans – including gun owners – are finally getting the attention they deserve from lawmakers.
This new program will require gun dealers in four Southwest border states – Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas – to report when someone buys multiple semi-automatic rifles within a short period of time.
Now, law enforcement officials have an important new tool to detect and fight illegal trafficking of guns across the U.S.-Mexico border. That’s crucial because 7 out of 10 guns traced to crime in Mexico originated in the U.S. – and nearly half of the crime guns recovered in Mexico are rifles and shotguns this measure is designed to crack down on.
It’s a start, but we need President Obama to do more to stop senseless shootings.
Thank the President – and ask him to keep taking strong, bold actions to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people:

There’s so much more we can do. So many more common sense steps are within reach if we just demonstrate the political will to act. We’ve proven we have the strength and persistence to force action against illegal guns. Let’s keep moving.
Sincerely,
Mayors Against Illegal Guns

Vast Corporate Conspiracy to Mold State Legislation Unveiled
The Center for Media and Democracy (a Move to Amend founding partner) has obtained copies of more than 800 model bills approved by corporations through ALEC meetings, after one of the thousands of people with access shared them, and a whistleblower provided a copy to the Center. They have analyzed and marked-up those bills and made them available at ALEC Exposed.
An open letter from CMD's Executive Director, Lisa Graves
In April 2011, some of the biggest corporations in the U.S. met behind closed doors in Cincinnati about their wish lists for changing state laws. This exchange was part of a series of corporate meetings nurtured and fueled by the Koch Industries family fortune and other corporate funding.
At an extravagant hotel gilded just before the Great Depression, corporate executives from the tobacco giant R.J. Reynolds, State Farm Insurance, and other corporations were joined by their "task force" co-chairs -- all Republican state legislators -- to approve “model” legislation. They jointly head task forces of what is called the “American Legislative Exchange Council” (ALEC).
There, as the Center for Media and Democracy has learned, these corporate-politician
committees secretly voted on bills to rewrite numerous state laws. According to the
documents we have posted to ALEC Exposed, corporations vote as equals with elected politicians on these bills.
These task forces target legal rules that reach into almost every area of American life: worker and consumer rights, education, the rights of Americans injured or killed by corporations, taxes, health care, immigration, and the quality of the air we breathe and the water we drink.
The Center obtained copies of more than 800 model bills approved by companies through ALEC meetings, after one of the thousands of people with access shared them, and a whistleblower provided a copy to the Center. Those bills, which the Center has analyzed and marked-up, are now available at ALEC Exposed.
The bills that ALEC corporate leaders, companies and politicians voted on this spring now head to a luxury hotel in New Orleans' French Quarter for ALEC’s national retreat on August 3rd. In New Orleans, Koch Industries -- through its chief lobbyist -- and lobbyists of other global companies are slated for a “joint board meeting” with a rookery of Republican legislators who are on ALEC's public board. Before the bills are publicly introduced in state legislatures by ALEC politicians or alumni in the governor’s offices, they will be cleansed of any reference to the secret corporate voting or who really wrote them.
With CMD’s publication of the bills, the public can now pierce through some of the subterfuge about ALEC, and see beyond the names of the bills to what the bills really do, alongside the names of corporations that lead or have helped lead ALEC's agenda and accompanied by analysis to help decode the bills.
Many of the bills have obvious financial benefits for corporations but little or no direct benefit to the constituents that a particular legislator was elected to represent. Still, it may be tempting to dismiss ALEC as merely institutionalizing business as usual for lobbyists, except that ALEC’s tax-free donations are linked to it not spending a substantial amount of time on lobbying to change the law. ALEC has publicly claimed its “unparalleled” success in terms of the number of model bills introduced and enacted. But seeing the text of the bills helps reveal the actual language of legal changes ALEC corporations desire, beyond what can be known by the PR in their titles.
ALEC says it has created a “unique” partnership between corporations and politicians. And it has.
It is a worrisome marriage of corporations and politicians, which seems to normalize a kind of corruption of the legislative process -- of the democratic process--in a nation of free people where the government is supposed to be of, by, and for the people, not the corporations.
The full sweep of the bills and their implications for America’s future, the corporate voting, and the extent of the corporate subsidy of ALEC's legislation laundering all raise substantial questions. These questions should concern all Americans. They go to the heart of the health of our democracy and the direction of our country.
When politicians -- no matter their party -- put corporate profits above the real needs of the people who elected them, something has gone very awry.
As President Teddy Roosevelt observed in response to corporate money corrupting the democratic process a century ago, "The true friend of property, the true conservative, is he who insists that property shall be the servant and not the master of the commonwealth . . . . The citizens of the United States must effectively controlthe mighty commercial forces which they have called into being."
ALEC anointed the billionaire Koch Brothers as two of the first few recipients of its “Adam Smith Free Enterprise Award.” Smith argued that self-interest promoted more good in society than those who intend to do good. "Greed is good!" is how Oliver Stone translated this concept to fiction on screen.
On that score, perhaps, the award was apt, except that ALEC apparently ignores Smith’s caution that bills and regulations from business must be viewed with the deepest skepticism. In his book, ''Wealth of Nations'', Smith urged that any law proposed by businessmen “ought always to be listened to with great precaution . . . It comes from an order of men, whose interest is never exactly the same with that of the public, who have generally an interest to deceive and even to oppress the public, and who accordingly have, upon many occasions, both deceived and oppressed it."
One need not look far in the ALEC bills to find reasons to be deeply concerned and skeptical.Take a look for yourself.

P.S. This weekend, on July 16 and 17, Americans in more than 1,500 cities, towns and neighborhoods will host house meetings to share stories, shape a new Contract for the American Dream, and set our priorities for how we can work together as a movement to fix our economy and rebuild the American Dream.
Move to Amend asks you to attend a meeting in your community, and invite others there to join our coalition.
Bring Move to Amend petitions with you, and make the case for why Move to Amend's proposal to amend the Constitution to abolish corporate personhood and make real the promise of American democracy needs to be part of the "Contract for the American Dream." You can submit ideas for the new Contract here.
