Video of WI GOP lawmakers ramming through anti-union bill

You've got to see this new video of Wisconsin Assembly Republicans holding a vote at 1am Friday morning for literally a few seconds and ramming through Gov. Walker's radical bill to cut worker benefits and rights. It's a crazy abuse of power.

VIDEO: Wisconsin abuse of power

Now, the only thing keeping this horrible bill from becoming law are state Senate Democrats -- who boldly left the state and are blocking the Senate from voting.

'Talking smack' won't save Haley or the people of South Carolina

I suppose our current governor is following in the footsteps of former governor Mark Sanford.

It was Sanford who coined the phrase "make noise" in regards to getting federal government support for dredging the Georgetown port. Now, Gov. Nikki Haley says she will "talk smack" toward unions looking to better the life of South Carolinians - to which Haley and Republican lawmakers perform the opposite.

"What you are seeing right now is a whole lot of political talk in D.C. and a whole lot of work in the states," said Haley, who was sworn in as the state's first female governor a little more than six weeks ago. "These governors get it. Washington, D.C., has totally lost the message. We are taking our governments back and giving it to the people."

Well, Nikki, you are now grouping yourself with the same rhetoric you just spoke against. So, "talking smack" is going to do what? Giving government to the people? You are TAKING IT AWAY, Nikki. Ask the children, who almost half live in some sort of poverty in S.C.

"The more heavy-handed the unions are with us, the more we are going to talk smack back," Haley said.

Please, I encourage you to "talk smack" with unions. Hey, how about start with me. Let's listen to your smack talk. So childish. What unions are doing now is not talking smack. They are fighting against governments that push anti-worker agendas. Talking smack is what teabaggers are known for.

Your position is that of a bully, knowing the law in the state is forcefully against unions. You'd rather politic with the positions unions stand on - those that empower workers, improve working conditions and increases wages - than actively solve the problems of this state. WE NEED JOBS. WE NEED REVENUE. WE NEED EDUCATION.

You'd rather call a presser and exclaim joy over cutting from children in the state. Laughable and truly sad all at the same time.

Listen to your handlers, Nikki. Don't accept my challenge. I would hate to embarrass you in your first year as governor.

From Cairo to Madison to Georgetown

Success! Over 120,000 Americans took to the streets yesterday to rally against the Republican-led assault on middle class families and jobs.

That's over 70,000 people who rallied in front of the capital in Madison, Wisconsin, who were joined by over 50,000 Americans in more than 60 cities nationwide -- every single person standing up in solidarity for the America Dream and against the Republicans trying to destroy good-paying jobs.

Let's face it, 2011 is turning into the year of the rally.

From unseating a president in Egypt, to shaping the budget debate in Madison, rallies have become a pillar tactic for our current political climate. It's also the subject of our first Night School online training of the year.

Join DFA National Field Organizer Jay Henderson and Derek Cressman from Common Cause this Wednesday night at 8:30 Eastern for a free online training on how to unleash the power of a well-organized rally.

It's now or never: Stand up for your rights, your jobs and way of life

Today's message to those who remain silent because of fear: No need to be afraid. They aren't of you. There are others. They share your pain and WILL stand with you if you stand with them. It's time.

Workers across the country have had corporation's foot on their throats. Now, those same corporations who can't stand workers thinking for themselves have brainwashed others to fight their cause. They are called tea partiers. They should call their rallies "Protest Against Ourselves" because that's what they effectively do.

What's happened in Wisconsin has made the whole labor movement stronger and closer. None of this would have been possible without the support, dedication and solidarity of both union members and non-union members who understand more than they have in a long time just how much we're all in this together.

South Carolina supporters gather today as well.

COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Political action group Moveon.org helped to organize rallies across the nation to stand in solidarity with pro-union demonstrators in Wisconsin.

The group called for an emergency rally at each statehouse across the nation to demand an end to the attacks on workers rights and public service.

Several folks from the Midlands came out to show their support for those Wisconsin.

"It is very important that we are gathering in every single state across the nation. Capitols of major cities are used to carry the message around. Wisconsin workers are not alone and neither are the other workers across the nation," says Rudy Majia.

What about Georgetown's port?

It's so shocking to see the advertiser-owned media forget the Georgetown port. Not. What's truly shocking is to see someone else forget the Georgetown port in mentioning their fight to bring money in for a study of Charleston's.

U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn is promising to get the $400,000 needed for a study of deepening the Charleston Harbor shipping channel. But he isn't saying how.

Clyburn told The Post and Courier of Charleston he has put an earmark for the money in the federal budget three times but it always died in the Senate.

The Democratic lawmaker says he's earmarked millions and that should be proof he will get the money. Clyburn isn't telling the media how he plans to go about it this time.

Rep. Clyburn, you don't have to tell me the uphill battle you face. I realize it, others are blind. However, I would like to see the Georgetown port stressed as much as Charleston's. We already know what depth our port needs to be. So, let's earmark the money and get jobs flowing into Georgetown.

Recently, my father has "made noise" - as former governor Mark Sanford asked us to - about the Georgetown port.

Dear James Newsome,

I am writing you to see what needs to be done to secure the necessary funding for South Carolina Ports.

I applaud you and your entire team for standing up for the people of South Carolina.

It puzzles me to see our elected leaders of South Carolina playing South Carolina Politics and pointing their fingers at other people.

The needs of the people here in South Carolina are being ignored while a few SC politicians grandstand. The people of South Carolina clearly understand how important our Ports are. The Ports in South Carolina are vital for our economy and for future development. It's a shame that we as a South Carolina Delegation couldn't stand hand in hand and request the needed funds to deepen and dredge our Ports.

So, where's the action? What about Georgetown?

SHAME! Wis. Assembly OKs Walker's Jobs Attack

 by Mike Hall, Feb 25, 2011 - AFL-CIO

The Republican-controlled Wisconsin State Assembly early this morning unexpectedly cut off debate and quick-marched a vote on Gov. Scott Walker’s (R) bill to eliminate the right of public service workers to bargain for middle-class jobs.

The bill passed 51-17 with 28 lawmakers—all Democrats, three Republicans and an independent—abstaining in protest. The bill still must pass the state Senate and Wisconsin workers continue their fight against the bill.

There were still more than 15 speakers still scheduled to speak out against the attack on workers and more amendments poised for votes. But according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel Republican leaders invoked rarely used rule to end the debate before voting on the bill.

That rule requires a motion seconded by 15 members and then a roll call vote. Assembly Chief Clerk Patrick Fuller said afterward he was not sure whether that had occurred, saying he had heard the order to start a vote on the final passage of the bill and had done so.

Later Rep. Kelda Helen Roys (D-Madison) said, “We never imagined they would do it as they did, not even properly using the nuclear option.”

After the rapid fire vote, Democratic Assembly members begin a chant of “Shame! Shame! Shame!” that was quickly picked up the legions Wisconsin workers in the packed  Assembly gallery. Teachers, nurses, state parks workers and other public employees and their supporters have been in Madison for nearly two-weeks in a historic protest against Walker’s assault on good jobs.

Republican lawmakers immediately left the chamber without comment.

Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca called the action

a sad day for day for this state when we are willing to ignore the traditions that people died for in this state, that people fought bitterly for.,we ignore our forefathers who made this a great state.

The bill still must pass the state Senate and Wisconsin workers continue their fight against the bill. Also hundreds of solidarity rallies are on tap across the country this weekend and we’ll bring you more on these later today.

Here’s a sample of some comments from workers and their backers following the vote.

Milkman57 PEOPLE we need to keep up the fight. This includes protests, social media, written media, and even water cooler talk. #wiunion

Workers are Under Attack: Stand with Educators Fighting for Their Rights!

Wisconsin Governor Walker continues to push his anti-worker agenda as he refuses to negotiate.  Educators in Wisconsin have repeatedly stated that this fight is not about pay and benefits – it is about the right to be heard.

This week, Governor Walker showed his true colors – an ideological agenda to silence workers.  In a taped conversation with someone posing as his supporter, billionaire David Koch, the Governor bragged about using layoff threats to bully and intimidate working families into submission.

While the nation seems to have its eyes and ears on Wisconsin, attacks are happening all across the country.  Teachers, school support staff, nurses, firefighters, and middle class workers and families are under relentless attack in state after state by an unprecedented, well-funded, and coordinated national campaign.  But, as the fight continues, workers and their supporters are standing up and demanding to be heard.  Rallies with unprecedented turnout have been held in states across the nation.  Read about rallies around the nation.

The labor movement in this country has been responsible for safety standards, the minimum wage, fair employment practices, and more.  For educators, our collective bargaining rights allow us to raise concerns about class size, school safety, and other important teaching and learning conditions.  To express your support for workers’ rights across the country, please sign our national petition and follow the latest news about the attacks on our rights.

Wisconsin solidarity rally in Columbia Saturday

Whatever you've got planned for Saturday afternoon, reschedule it.
Teachers, nurses, firefighters, students, police officers and others protesting in Wisconsin have occupied the Capitol building and streets of Madison for the past nine days.
On Saturday at noon, their protest is going national. In cities across the nation, including every state capital, we'll come together to stand in solidarity with the people of Wisconsin.
This time the Republicans have gone too far in their attempts to bust unions, slash state budgets, and give tax breaks to their wealthy friends.
So on Saturday we'll stand up to say that we're sick of the attacks on workers' rights. That we're sick of an economy that showers corporate executives with bonuses while squeezing middle-class families. That we still believe in the American Dream. And that we're willing to fight for it.
Can you make it to the rally in Columbia?
We're putting everything we've got into one massive display of solidarity nationwide. We'll all show up wearing Wisconsin Badger colors: red and white. And if we can get huge crowds across the nation, it'll send a clear message that progressives are fired up and ready to go.
Until this week, Republicans have dominated the debate over the economy—with Washington arguing about which vital programs to slash, instead of how to create jobs and help the middle class. Now the Republicans are threatening to shut down the government next week in order to force Democrats to agree to devastating cuts to NPR, the EPA, food aid to hungry kids, clean energy research, AmeriCorps and more.
But thanks to the folks braving the cold in Wisconsin, that could all change. This is an opening to call out the Republican game plan for what it is: a brazen effort to use a wrecked economy as an excuse to reward the rich and powerful while destroying 50 years of democratic progress.
That's why we've come together with a huge coalition of progressive organizations—from the Netroots to the labor movement, environmental groups to community organizations—to show our strength and make sure the folks in Wisconsin know that millions of people across the country are standing with them.
Will you join us Saturday in Columbia so we have a huge crowd? Click here to RSVP:
Thanks for all you do.

What the gun lobby doesn't want you to see

The American political debate about guns has gotten so loud that it often drowns out the voices that matter the most: the families of gun crime victims.

So when Senator Chuck Schumer joined us to announce legislation to Fix Gun Checks yesterday, we put their voices front and center by showing this moving video about the real cost of gun crime.  Please take a moment to watch the video and share it with your friends and family.

It's Time To Stand Up For Veterans in Labor

As you know, in Wisconsin and a number of other of states, governors are trying to take away the right of unions to collectively bargain.  If you thought this didn’t affect veterans, think again.  Take a moment to view a short video I’ve recorded on the subject, and stand with us, as we stand up for workers.

CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE VIDEO AND SIGN THE PETITION

Nationally, over 2 million veterans are also members of unions – many of them in Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, and other states that are considering taking away a union’s right to negotiate.  For those veterans, this is a matter of having a fair wage, benefits, and decent health insurance.  It is for them that we’re standing up.

Additionally, many public employees have, for years, provided quality services to the veterans’ community.  In Wisconsin, for example, there are nearly half a million veterans.  Public employees help run veterans’ homes, drive disabled veterans to their VA center for treatment, and help homeless veterans at transitional housing programs.  They’ve done an extraordinary job, under tough circumstances.  Yet, governors in a number of states want to punish these employees, rather than reward them for their dedication to helping veterans.  It is also for them that we’re standing up.

STAND WITH US – SIGN OUR PETITION STANDING WITH PUBLIC EMPLOYEES

We need to make clear, right now, to governors who want to try to punish public employees – many of them United States Veterans – that we will not stand for it.  We will not stand for taking away the right that veterans, and those who serve them, have to negotiate fair pay for fair work.  Only by being vocal can you make a difference.  So, please, click on the link above, and share with your friends and family.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,
Ashwin Madia

U.S. Catholic Bishops Major Force Behind War on Women

Statement of NOW President Terry O'Neill

The collusion of House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has led to an open declaration of war on the women of this country. The bishops have long sought to enshrine into law those policies of the Catholic Church that subordinate women. And they don't care how badly women get hurt in the process.

In the last election, the bishops helped to elect legislators that would do their bidding, which includes enacting dangerous and discriminatory bills denying women safe, accessible and affordable abortion care and family planning, even encouraging hospitals to let women die in the name of 'life.'

A recent poll shows abortion 'barely registers' among voter priorities, and yet Speaker Boehner has declared barring federal funding for abortion care a 'highest priority' -- responding not to the call of his constituents but to the demands of the bishops. And it turns out abortion isn't the only target, as evidenced by their stunningly dangerous efforts that, if enacted, can and will result in the preventable deaths of women:
  • The proposed continuing resolution passed by the House to temporarily keep the government functioning would zero out Title X family planning, which has never covered abortion care. Should this gain traction in the Senate, millions of women, the vast majority of whom have incomes of less than $11,000 per year, will lose access to pap smears, testing for sexually transmitted infections, and contraception. It is a public health nightmare -- but a dream-come-true for the Catholic bishops.
  • HR 358, which many are calling the 'Let the Women Die Act' not only brings back Rep. Joe Pitts' (R-Pa.) rejected Stupak-Pitts proposition from health care reform, but also encourages providers to refuse training, performance and even referral of abortion care. This bill gives our government's 'blessing' to any emergency room that would let a pregnant woman die rather than perform an abortion procedure that could save her life.
  • HR 3, also known as 'Stupak on Steroids,' would enshrine the Hyde Amendment into law and expand it to impose tax penalties on millions of families and businesses whose private insurance covers abortion care, thereby expanding the scope of Internal Revenue Service audits to the area between women's legs. In testifying in favor of this bill in committee, a representative from the Catholic bishops proudly supported revoking abortion rights even in cases of rape. You read that right -- and isn't that rich, coming from the very men who have consistently protected sexually abusive priests?
  • And HR 217, which NOW has dubbed the 'Public Health Nightmare Act,' would permanently eliminate Title X family planning services, leaving millions of women and men stranded without essential services like birth control, cancer screenings and screenings for HIV/AIDS and STDs.
Pro-life? Hardly.

Not only are these assaults on women's rights at odds with generally accepted medical practice and flatly unethical, there is little doubt that they will kill women.

The National Organization for Women is fighting back against these efforts in coalition with our allies and women's health advocates across the country. We also renew our demand that the federal government require the all-male and violently anti-woman U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops follow the same lobbying and disclosure requirements that currently apply to everyone else.

Schumer announces major gun legislation

One of the highest-ranking members of the Senate just announced new legislation to fix our broken background check system. This is a huge moment, and now is the time to build support to Fix Gun Checks.

The legislation announced today by Senator Chuck Schumer, would take the two key steps we’ve been calling for to stop dangerous people from getting guns:

  1. Get all the names of people who should be prohibited from buying guns into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).
  2. Require a background check for every gun sale in America.
Our National Drive to Fix Gun Checks is already on the road, gathering petition signatures and raising awareness of the 34 Americans murdered with guns every day. But this new bill demands that we redouble our efforts in calling for reform.

That's why we're asking you to forward this email to 34 friends. Ask them to sign the Fix Gun Checks petition and support our campaign to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people.

43 years ago, after the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, Congress passed the first legislation to stop dangerous people from purchasing guns.

Congress added a background check system two decades later to strengthen this landmark law. But the flaws in the system have been exposed again and again -- in the massacres at Columbine and Virginia Tech, and last month at the tragedy in Tucson, Arizona.

Now, this legislation can fulfill the promise Congress made 43 years ago and help stop the senseless shootings that leave 34 Americans dead each day.

Please forward this email and ask 34 friends to add their names to the Fix Gun Checks petition:

http://www.FixGunChecks.org

This is our best chance for real, credible reform that will keep our families safe from gun crime. Let’s get as many people as possible to join us in this crucial fight.

Sincerely,
Mayors Against Illegal Guns

Sign up for Pro-Choice Lobby Day!

Anti-choice lawmakers in Congress have launched an all-out war on women's reproductive rights.

Allowing hospitals to refuse to provide women with life-saving abortion care. Slashing funds for birth control and cancer screenings. Threatening to take away private insurance coverage of abortion. Attacking valued health-care providers like Planned Parenthood.  All this – and more – is on the table

Fight back. Join us for a pro-choice lobby day in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, April 7.

Tell us you’ll be there. We’ll provide training and organize lobby visits with members of Congress in your state.

Saturday Rally to Stop The Assault On Workers

This Saturday we're drawing a line in the sand. We're putting everything we've got into one massive display of progressive solidarity nationwide.
The protests in Wisconsin have created an opportunity we've got to seize. For too long, Republicans have dominated have dominated the debate over the economy. But this time, the Republicans have gone too far.
That's why we've joined with allies across the country to organize solidarity rallies in major cities--including every state capital--this Saturday at noon. We'll speak out to demand an end to the attacks on workers' rights and public services across the country. We'll demand investment to create decent jobs. And we'll demand that the rich and powerful pay their fair share.
This massive progressive coalition is urging everyone to show our unity with the protesters in Wisconsin by wearing red and white to their local rally on Saturday.
It's up to us to show our solidarity and make sure the amazing energy in Wisconsin spreads to the rest of the country, so that those who claim we can cut our way to prosperity don't win the day.
But to make that happen, progressives around the country need to stand up right away and speak out against the far-right attacks on workers and public services.
Republicans are launching similar attacks on workers in other states. And in Washington, Republicans are threatening to shut the government down next week unless Democrats agree to massive cuts to everything from NPR to education to food aid for hungry children. This is our chance to shift the debate and put Republicans like Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and his tea party friends in Washington on the defensive.
We've come together with a huge coalition of progressive organizations--from the Netroots to the labor movement, environmental groups to community organizations--to back these rallies and make sure that the folks in Wisconsin know that millions of people across the country are standing with them.
Sincerely,

Tell Congress to Say NO to the 'Son of NAFTA'

At a time of record unemployment and economic downturn, we do not need another trade agreement that is essentially a giveaway to the big multinational corporations. The South Korea trade agreement will soon be submitted to Congress. It is the largest agreement since NAFTA. The U.S. has lost 5 million jobs since NAFTA was enacted; why would we want this “Son of NAFTA”? According to the Economic Policy Institute, this proposed trade deal would cost 159,000 U.S. jobs over seven years. The U.S. International Trade Commission has also estimated that the South Korea trade agreement would increase our trade deficit and has identified nine economic sectors that would be affected, including some of the highest-paying industries in our country, such as motor vehicles and parts, electronics equipment, and metal products.

It would also give South Korean multinationals new rights to challenge U.S. laws, giving foreign companies and investors more power in this country than our own small businesses. The agreement poses some real security concerns by allowing South Korean cars sold in the United States to be made mostly in other countries because of the low rule-of-origin requirement. For example, a car could be made with parts mostly from other countries, including North Korea. The trade deal also contains language explicitly forbidding International Labor Organization (ILO) conventions.

Please e-mail your member(s) of Congress today to let them know that now is not a time for another job-killing trade agreement. Tell your Representative and Senators to say “NO” to the “Son of NAFTA”! To send an e-mail, click here.

Stand together to save the American Dream this Saturday

Working Families Party candidate (2010) Rob Groce sent this in:

Calling all students, teachers, union members, workers, patriots, public servants, unemployed folks, progressives, and people of conscience:

In Wisconsin and around our country, the American Dream is under fierce attack. Instead of creating jobs, Republicans are giving tax breaks to corporations and the very rich, and then cutting funding for education, police, emergency response and vital human services. The right to organize is on the chopping block. The American Dream is slipping out of reach for more and more Americans, and we have to fight back.

We call for emergency rallies in front of every statehouse this Saturday at noon to stand in solidarity with the people of Wisconsin. Demand an end to the attacks on workers' rights and public services across the country.

Demand investment, to create decent jobs for the millions of people who desperately want to work. And demand that the rich and powerful pay their fair share.

We are all Wisconsin.

We are all Americans.

Add your endorsement and this Saturday we will stand together to save the American Dream.
